Side effects
Everyone face different side effects after Chemotherapy. Mine differs after every cycle.
Here goes the list. I am still going through my cycles, so the list will grow, I'm sure.
Here goes the list. I am still going through my cycles, so the list will grow, I'm sure.
- Mouth ulcers. Oh boy this is the one I hate. It's painful even when I open my mouth. Couldn't talk properly. Luckily a friend recommended GelClair - a mouthwash specially formulated for cancer patients. It worked like a charm!
- Rashes - I have rashes all over my body. It appeared bit by bit and one day you realize that they are everywhere! Only way to overcome it is lots of patience and apply ointments diligently. I also take drowsy anti-itch pills at night so I don;t spend the night scratching.
- Pimples - this one is bad for me, I never have pimples this much growing up, so it lowers down my self esteem a great deal. But again, patience is the only friend I have.
- Hair loss - inevitable. 2 weeks after my first chemo, I played with my hair and there it was, a bunch came off. I freaked out, hubby looked at me and smiled, baby, it's time to go for a shave. So we went together, shaved our heads together and came back singing "Nothing Compares to You" by Sinead O'Connor.
- Nausea - I didn't have much of this, just a mild one occasionally.
- Weight Loss - I lost 5 kg within the first 2 weeks after first chemo. And after that, I made sure I ate as normal as possible so maintain the weight. Too much weight loss will make me weak, and being weak won't help in fighting this disease!
- Eye twitch - I have this occasionally. It's really irritating but usually it'll go off after a few minutes.
- Loss of taste - hence the weight loss. I can't taste much, except sour. So lemon is a good friend in the kitchen. I use lemon in almost everything I cooked!
- Hot & cold flushes - now I know how it feels going through menopause. I feel hot, so hot I need to turn on the air-con the coldest possible. And a few minutes later, I feel so cold, I need to wear sweater. And this goes on the whole time, all chemo cycles.
- Early menopause - I was told this is temporary. My period stopped and I'm drying out, everywhere - face, body.
- Tired - I feel tired all the time. But your willpower is needed to overcome this. Just get up your butt and go through life as normal as you could!
- Memory fog - I have trouble remembering things. Have to work extra hard to remember things and even finding words as I chat.
- Low white blood cells count - mine went down so low, I had to be hospitalized and isolated. Booster japs had to be administer everyday for a week after every chemo cycles.
Yup, that's it for now. I hope the list won't grow.
